I want to start off by saying that I know we live in a sinful world. I am trying to educate myself as much as possible before Ebaby gets here. I have been raised to love people no matter what, which isn't always the norm here in the South. I have had lots of discussions with people lately: some who think Ebaby will not have to deal with racial issues, others who think that she will have an even more difficult life due to living in our "white" family. I just pray that she will be raised to grow up in a family where she will see her true beauty that God designed for her. (The funny thing is, we've been waiting on Hannah Grace for 3 years now & haven't had this much discussion over her as we have for Ebaby. Huh... Something to think about.)
As I watched this short video, I couldn't help but think of that last little girl. If you didn't catch it, go back and watch as she discovers what she has learned about herself. I don't know if she ever saw herself as having the darker skin, or if she just hadn't put the connection together. It is almost frightening for me to watch her. In one moment she says the black baby is bad & then realizes what she thinks when the lady asks her which baby looks most like her.
I love watching people. I love research & studies to see how people think (there's the Marketing degree I received that I never get to use!). But, I have to admit, this short video has done a number on me. Have we as a society really not changed? Sure, on paper, in laws, and in schools it looks as if we are a changed society. But, what are we actually teaching ourselves? I was shocked to see that over the years not very much has changed. Of course, then I wonder where were those kids from? What is their background? Do they live in a multicultural area or are they here in the South near me? What race was the woman who administered the test? Were they somehow trying to give her the "correct" answer? I don't know. I do know that I have a lot to learn. I hope I don't come back to this in 5 years and cringe at my uneducated thinking.
Praying that God will lead us all to a unity here on our little planet. "Red, yellow, brown, and white they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world."
