Okay, I have to confess that I am an Olympic junkee. Nothing has kept me up past 11pm in a long time, but the Olympics do. I love to watch Swimming and last night was absolutely amazing. The Men's 4x100 Relay will definitley go down in Olympic history as one of the best races of all time. With all they hype created by the French trash talking the Americans, it was set up for a great race. Everyone expected the French to win, that is everyone except the American swimmers. Michael Phelps in unquestionabely the great swimmer of all time, but it was Jason Lezak who was the real hero in this race. With less than 50m to go, he was behind by almost a 3/4 length and came back in the last second to touch just a head of the French.
Not only did the Americans break the world record, but 5 teams came in under the World Record.
I want to add a quick spiritual application, if you look at the footage of the last second, you can see Frenchman Alain Bernard glance over to see where Lezak was. That split second could have made the difference in the race. He took his eyes off of the finish line and lost the race. When we take even a brief glance away for OUR prize (Jesus) we lose. Ask Peter about walking on water. Ask John Edwards what a fleeting affair can do to your political carrer. Ask anyone who has made that one fatal slipup that changed their life. We are called to live a life of pursuing Christ and when we don't we fail. The good news is that we have a forgiving God who loves us in spite of our short comings. So enjoy the Olympics, I'll be watching. But remember, we are all called to our own race and "Run in such a way as to get the prize." God bless you.
